Just Keep Moving!

Here at Longevity, we are constantly using phrases like movement is medicine, motion is lotion, and rest is rust - but why, you ask? What does that actually mean?

Well my friends, today is the day I talk about one of my favorite topics - using the body to heal itself. Our goal is to keep people moving and, whenever possible, to keep them away from unnecessary medications, injections, and surgeries. That can be such a slippery slope. Those things absolutely have a place, but they should rarely be your first course of action. The body is an amazing machine. It has an incredible, built-in ability to heal, adapt, and become stronger and more stable and resilient - through movement! Sometimes it just needs a little guidance, support, and the right plan to ensure a good combo of mobility, stability and strength.

The oldest client I’ve ever worked with was Ms. Betty. She was 99 years old and came to physical therapy on her own, riding the bus from her assisted living community to see me for shoulder pain. She was British, absolutely adorable, and super sassy. I loved her energy!! As her 100th birthday was approaching, I asked her what her secret was, and she exclaimed, “Just keep moving!!” That stuck with me. I’ve carried it with me ever since. And honestly? It applies to everyone.

In our holistic, performance-based clinic, we work with people of all ages, all fitness levels, and all types of goals—from high-level athletes to people who just want to keep up with their kids or grandkids. The message is the same for all of them: Move well. Move often. There are so many things in life we can’t control—but let’s focus on the things we can. We can control how we take care of ourselves. We can control what we eat. We can control how we move. These are choices we make every single day, and those choices directly influence how we will feel someday when we reach Ms. Betty’s age. We all want to live a long time, but we also want to feel good while doing it, so that we can make the most of every moment we have!

I have a quote in my office that says: “The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it.” That is our goal here at Longevity - to help avoid medicines, injections and surgeries - to use movement as medicine, to help you feel better, move better, and perform better for the long run!

So remember, just like Ms. Betty said: Just keep moving!!
